The lines: E G B D F
From the bottom up, the five lines are E, G, B, D, F. The classic sentence: Every Good Boy Does Fine.
The spaces: F A C E
From the bottom up, the four spaces spell a word: FACE. And the top space is the high E, your 1st-string landmark.
Step or skip
The second skill, and the most important one for reading fast, is looking at the distance to the next note:
- Step (+1 or −1): line to the next space. The next note of the scale.
- Skip of a 3rd (+2 or −2): line to the next line, or space to the next space. It skips one note.
- Repeat (=): same pitch.
Ode to Joy with the moves marked
After the first note, you don’t need to name the others. You just need to know “up one, up one, down two”. That’s how fluent readers read: they spot the first note and follow the shape.
Practice in parts
Work each level until it feels easy. Lines first, then spaces, then the whole staff.
